Database Maintenance
A database evolves with use and with changing user and technical requirements. A well designed database ages well, that is it can be kept for a long period of time without having to be restructured or causing excessive costs for changes.
Typically, a database is designed with some specific application in mind, and is optimised for the operation that is most important to the users at that point in time. For example it could be that a database is optimised for input when it is new. The structure of that database is designed for fast data entry. As data is built up, users may change the focus towards greater output, that is using the data assets for discovery or other output oriented activities. This shift in focus may require a database structure change.
Another example of a change is when the database vendor changes version of the software you are using, or when you decide to get a different computer. In both those cases adaptive changes may be required of the database.
Database changes requires a structured and disciplined approach. Formal change management procedures are essential to ensure that the changes do not damage the database as well carry a prohibitive cost.
AMITA can support your database maintenance by taking full responsibility for all maintenance activities, or we can provide skilled resources to work under your direction to make changes to the database.
We can also work on consultative basis to set up a database maintenance organisation and procedures. AMITA is ISO 9000 registered – we have extensive experience in a controlled maintenance environment.
By using AMITA services you be assured that your data assets as well as software assets are managed in the most cost effective and efficient manner.
